Amazon.com launched a private label brand called Pinzon in 2005 that was initially designed to offer mostly household goods, although it quickly expanded to include clothing, clothing accessories, jewelry, and many other household product industries.

There are a few things about Pinzon that makes it a unique and welcome brand for consumers:

  • Quality – Amazon does not actually manufacture most of the products for their private label. A variety of specialized companies that make goods for other leading brands in their industries actually manufactures the Pinzon line.
  • Exclusivity – Products available from this brand can only be purchased online through Amazon! This means you don’t have to shop around to find the best price among competitors.
  • Price – Since they do not actually run a retail store to sell their goods, their operational costs are lower than traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. The end result is a high quality product for an affordable price, and the products are often made by the exact same companies that make the more expensive products.

Bedding Types from Pinzon
Amazon offers two main styles of down comforters – Pyrenees and PrimaLoft. These are actually manufactured by DownLite, which has made comforters for every major hotel brand and many major international retailers.

Most people save up all year to take a week long vacation somewhere and stay in a nice hotel. The most memorable and important part of the hotel is the comfort of the bed because without it, the rest of the experience can be obsolete.

Those same luxury beds and down comforter sets at your favorite vacation destination were most likely made by DownLite, so Pinzon offers an affordable way to get this same comfort at home.

Pyrenees
These are the real down comforters by Pinzon. They offer a white goose down and a white down version of these comforters. The goose down is more expensive because it contains a higher percentage of real down feathers and has a higher fill power, while the unspecified down is cheaper with a slightly lower fill power and only 75% real feathers. One of the best things about Pinzon’s Pyrenees down comforters is that their filling does not shift, and they’re hypoallergenic because the down has been sterilized. They can even be machine washed and dried at home because of the patented stitching design.

The real down feather comforters available by Pinzon through Amazon are called Pyrenees. This name actually refers to the filling used in the blankets.

This same material can actually be found inside competitor products from companies like Pacific Coast, although Pinzon by Amazon seems to offer one of the most affordable products for consumers.

Not only is it affordable, but it is actually a high quality product made by the same company that manufactures comforters for other brands.

On top of that, these items from Pinzon use a patented PermaBaffle technology that holds fill material in place. It even allows people to care for their real feather comforter in a washer and dryer at home instead of dry cleaning that is necessary for most other blankets like these.

White Goose Down vs White Down
Many products on the market use labeling that can be unclear or vague. In particular with Pyrenees items, some are called white goose and others are just called white.

There are regulations in place that control the words that brands can use on their labels for these types of items. Those labeled as goose are required to have a minimum percentage of real goose down feathers (90%), while the white down can actually be a lower percentage of real feathers (75% is common) mixed with synthetic fibers.

White goose down will always be more expensive than white down, simply because it is expensive to harvest the real feathers. However, this is the comforter you’ll want to buy if you’re looking for a genuine down blanket.

What is Pyrenees?
Down comforter products are often labeled as a particular type of down, but the average consumer often does not understand these labels because they use unfamiliar terms that specifically relate to this industry.

Pyrenees down is one of these often misunderstood fill materials used in various bedding goods, including blankets, pillows, duvets and more.

Most of the real feathers used in bedding sets these days comes from geese, so pyrenees is goose down. However, there are other types of goose feathers, so what exactly is it?

The name actually refers to the geographic location where the birds live or originate – the Pyrenees Mountains between the countries of France and Spain.

Most feathers are no longer farmed from wild birds, except for Eider, so this material likely comes from farms of domesticated geese in that region. When a goose is nesting, it will molt premium down feathers that are harvested. The result from Pyrenees geese is a down with a fill power of 550 to 600.

This material is commonly used in down comforters, pillows, and duvets, but it isn’t exclusive to a single company or brand – many of them actually utilize this same fill material.

For comforters containing Pyrenees down besides Pinzon, take a look at Pacific Coast.

PrimaLoft
This is a popular fill used for down alternative comforters, which is not exclusive to the Pinzon brand. It is considered to be a luxury down alternative fill and mimics the premium quality of goose down. The US Army actually contracted it to be developed as a synthetic replacement for goose down that is also hypoallergenic and water resistant. The fill is actually ultra-fine fibers and not real feathers, so they can be easily machine washed and dried. A major advantage of these is that they are much cheaper than real down but still offer the comfort and insulation properties.

PrimaLoft is a synthetic down alternative that is a popular fill used by a number of different companies for products like bedding comforters, jackets, gloves, sleeping bags, footwear, and other outdoor products. Among synthetic materials, it is considered to be a luxury down alternative because of its superior characteristics over other imitation synthetic downs.

This material was actually developed under contract by the US Army in 1983. They used real goose down feathers in things like clothing and sleeping bags that were manufactured for the Army, but there were a number of problems experienced using real down.

For the military, one of the most crucial problems is the fact that down loses its thermal insulation properties when it becomes wet. Obviously, soldiers are bound to get wet at some point, so they needed something that was water resistant and would still retain heat when wet.

By May 1986, PrimaLoft One had obtained a patent for its synthetic down. By 1989, this material was put into commercial production for use in jackets sold by L.L. Bean. Since that time, it has been used in a variety of other outdoor apparel and even bedding products to replace traditional down feathers.

This synthetic down has a number of advantages over real down:

  • Thermal Insulation – When dry, both materials perform equally, but when wet, the real down loses structure and no longer holds air to retain heat. The synthetic material maintains loft even under wet conditions.
  • Hypoallergenic – A lot of people that have allergy sensitivities have reported issues with real down feather bedding products, but synthetic down does not experience this issue.
  • Machine Washable – Since real feathers lose insulation properties when they get wet, they cannot be washed at home in a washing machine (they need to be dry cleaned). However, PrimaLoft based products can be safely washed in cold water on the gentle cycle and even tumble dried at a low temperature.

Amazon’s exclusive brand, Pinzon, utilizes this material in their hypoallergenic down alternative comforter. It also features Ribbon Fiber Technology that allows it to be compressed and then quickly regain its loft.

For anyone interested in a PrimaLoft comforter, we recommend Pinzon’s for their quality and extreme affordability. For a luxury down alternative comforter, it is really difficult to find another one of this quality for the same price.

How does Amazon do it? Their secret is not having a brick-and-mortar retail store. This gives them lower operational costs than the competitors and they pass along the savings to you.

The Pinzon PrimaLoft comforter is manufactured by a company named DownLite that makes most of the PrimaLoft line of bedding goods. This is not just for Amazon though – we’re talking about other major brands like Bed Bath & Beyond, Sealy, Macy’s, Eddie Bauer, Bloomingdales and many more. They have also manufactured these products for every single major hotel chain and many cruise ship companies and private properties.

If you’ve ever gone on a vacation to a nice hotel and had a wonderful night sleep on a very comfortable bedding set, you most likely slept on PrimaLoft products. You can now get that same comfort in your own home for a price that will shock you because it is so affordable.
